Hopelessness to Hope

This era is witnessing the highest rate of unemployment globally.

Some individuals have been let go of their jobs, and others had a salary cut. Also, who would’ve thought that we will be getting to a stage where virtual commencement ceremonies are the “ideal circumstances”. This year has been hard on fresh graduates since they have been waiting for this moment in their lives, the moment where they complete their education, hear their names, and walk before their friends and families to get their diplomas, however, this is not the hardest part. Many of the fresh graduates who were offered jobs pre-pandemic are now rejected due to downsizing, and others can’t find a job to start with. Also, many students who are expected to graduate in the next couple of months have to complete an internship before graduation. Those individuals are also suffering a great deal to find opportunities for the same reason as fresh graduates.

If you are struggling with the above, all I’d like to tell you is to be patient and don’t give up. Here are some things you can do to increase your likeliness being hired for either opportunity.

Start online networking

The most important thing is to make yourself recognizable and intriguing online. You want people to know who you are by viewing your online presence since at the moment, it's very hard to meet face to face.

Create own internship

This might sound odd, but this trick works even without the presence of a global pandemic. Many companies are hunting for individuals with initiative. Offering your services to companies who have no open vacancies that resemble you and your expertise will boost your chances of being memorable and likable, and it might even encourage employers to higher you for services they didn’t think they need in the first place.

Get comfortable with the idea of remote work

As you have noticed, most companies have shifted to remote working. With this said, being prepared .for such circumstances add value to your profile. Companies want to know that you are capable of working and adapting to all sorts of circumstances.

Enhancing your skills

We have heard a lot about taking advantage of this time to do things you haven’t had the chance to do or to learn things you’ve wanted to for a while. This is also applicable to gain recognition and credibility. There are many online courses and certificates available to enhance your level of skills and knowledge. Everyone wants someone who is perseverant.

Where to search

Aside from finding jobs directly off a company’s website, there are 2 very efficient ways that really work.

For starters, LinkedIn. if you don’t have a profile, or you haven’t put the effort in setting it up, I advise you to start working on it.  Another way to search for a job is through a recruitment agency. I strongly recommend using Business Lobby of course. I’ve heard they’re the best! The process is simple. You have to reach out to us by sending your CV and we’ll do the rest. That’s it.

When to apply

It is always advisable to start applying as soon as you graduate as soon as you have the opportunity to do so. Unless you have the greatest luck, it is very unlikely to get accepted to the first and only job you apply for. Use the time you are spending home to start hunting for positions you find suitable for you and apply to as many openings as you can. Remember to always aim high.

I want to wish you all the best of luck. Feel free to contact us for further advice or clarification on job searches and applications. We are here to listen and help.
