A leading Building & Civil Engineering Contractors Company located in Lagos, Nigeria is looking for a Piling Plant Manager to join their team.
The Piling Plant Manager is responsible for the strategic planning, operational management, and technical supervision of all piling equipment, personnel, and plant-related activities across multiple project sites. The role ensures optimal equipment utilization, operational efficiency, cost control, and compliance with safety and quality standards in support of foundation and marine construction operations.
Responsibilities
Operational Management
- Direct and supervise all piling plant operations, including hydraulic piling rigs, rotary drilling rigs, vibratory and impact hammers, crawler cranes, and associated auxiliary equipment.
- Coordinate plant mobilization and demobilization in line with project schedules and foundation work sequences.
- Ensure high levels of equipment availability to support daily production targets.
- Monitor operational performance indicators such as pile installation rates and equipment downtime.
Plant & Equipment Management
- Establish and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs for piling rigs and support equipment.
- Implement and monitor Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) systems.
- Supervise workshop operations including fabrication, welding, hydraulic repairs, and equipment overhauls.
- Maintain adequate inventories of spare parts and critical consumables.
- Ensure equipment inspections, certifications, and regulatory compliance requirements are met.
Technical Supervision
- Review pile design requirements and ensure appropriate equipment selection (rotary, driven, or CFA systems).
- Provide technical support to site teams in diagnosing and resolving mechanical or hydraulic issues.
- Monitor wear components such as Kelly bars, augers, casing systems, vibratory clamps, and hammer cushions.
- Ensure proper calibration and functionality of instrumentation and monitoring systems.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Enforce strict HSE standards across all piling, lifting, and marine operations.
- Ensure the implementation of approved lifting plans, risk assessments, and method statements.
- Investigate plant-related incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure all operators are properly trained and certified for their assigned equipment.
Financial & Cost Management
- Prepare and manage plant operational budgets.
- Monitor maintenance, repair, and operational costs.
- Optimize equipment allocation to minimize idle time and maximize productivity.
- Evaluate repair versus replacement strategies for plant equipment.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and manage plant engineers, mechanics, foremen, operators, and workshop personnel.
- Implement operator training and competency development programs.
- Conduct performance evaluations and technical competency assessments.
- Promote operational discipline, accountability, and continuous improvement across project sites.
Vendor & Procurement Coordination
- Liaise with OEMs and equipment suppliers for technical support and warranty matters.
- Negotiate spare parts procurement and service agreements.
- Assess and recommend new technologies and equipment upgrades to enhance operational efficiency.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in heavy civil construction plant management.
- At least 5 years of experience specifically in piling or foundation equipment operations.
Technical Expertise
Strong knowledge of:
- Hydraulic piling rigs
- Rotary drilling equipment
- Vibratory and impact hammers
- Crawler cranes (50–250+ ton class)
- Marine piling platforms (where applicable)
Technical Skills
- Advanced knowledge of hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and heavy equipment structural components.
- Proficiency in maintenance management systems.
- Strong analytical skills for production monitoring and cost analysis.
- Ability to interpret pile logs and geotechnical reports is an advantage.
